Quest Grades 4-6: Class Descriptions, Dates & Times

Below are the class descriptions of the nine engaging, science-based, hands-on labs for the 2023-2024 Saturday GENE-iuses Program!

 LAB #
GRADES 4-6 LABS
DESCRIPTION
DATES & TIMES
Lab 1
Getting to the Heart of the Matter
Lab 1
You’ve all felt your heartbeat before. You’ve likely seen your own blood when you got a cut, then watched it form a scab. This lab explores each of these physiological functions: how your heart works, the different components of blood, and how blood carries oxygen and forms scabs. You don’t want to miss this lab. It’s sure to be a bloody good time!
September 16, 2023
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 2
Anatomy of a Skeleton!
Lab 2
Spooky skeletons swarm the lab as we learn about bones and their functions! In this lab you’ll learn the names of different bones, what makes bones so strong, and how joints keep skeletons flexible. You’ll even get to dissect an owl pellet to look for the bones of its last meal!
October 21, 2023
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 3
Brushing up on Brains
Lab 3
Did you know that our brains use chemical and electric signals to send messages?! In this lab, you’ll learn how neurons in the brain communicate with each other, allowing you to walk, think, breathe, learn, sing…and do everything else you do! And what better way to learn about brain function and anatomy than to observe a real brain!
November 4, 2023
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 4
Catalysts: Reaction Assistants
Lab 4
Just as scientists need lab assistants, sometimes chemical reactions need a little help. This help comes from catalysts, which speed up reactions. In this lab, you’ll use catalysts to speed up reactions yourself and watch some explosive demonstrations!
December 2, 2023
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 5
The Key to Classification
Lab 5
IGrow a spine! Let’s talk about the differences between invertebrates and vertebrates. We’ll also we’ll get our organisms in order and build on your knowledge about how scientists group different organisms. You’ll even get to build your own key to help identify different plant species in Hawaii. Be sure to take your key home to see if you can identify and group plants in your own neighborhood!
January 27, 2024
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 6
The Web We Weave
Lab 6
You may have heard of a food chain, but what about a food web? Most organisms have more than one food source and are hunted by more than one predator. These links between who eats can get pretty complicated! In this lab, we’ll piece together a food pyramid, weave a food web, and investigate species interactions. We’ll try not to get too tangled up in it all!
February 17, 2024
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 7
Under Pressure!
Lab 7
Do your ears hurt when you dive too deep into a pool or the ocean? You’re experiencing just a tiny bit of pressure that builds up underwater. Imagine the amazing adaptations it takes for animals to withstand the pressure in the deep ocean. In this lab, you’ll learn why pressure increases underwater, how this limits human activity in the ocean, and how marine mammals can cope with pressure naturally.
March 23, 2024
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 8
Mountains, Streams, and Rain! Oh My!
Lab 8
In Hawaii the ocean surrounds us, but how often do you consider the entire watershed? A watershed includes the rain and streams that all funnel into the ocean. In this lab, you’ll build your own island in order to explore watersheds and the life they sustain. You’ll soon see why aquatic biologists need to study the rain, streams, and ocean to get a complete picture.
April 20, 2024
AM: 10 - 12 PM
PM: 2 - 4 PM
Lab 9
Agriculture All Around!
Lab 9
Human society has long been tied to agriculture. Our ability to cultivate plants and animals has allowed us to settle all over the world. The science we use in agriculture is ever-changing as we learn more about how farms connect to the landscapes around them. Learn about how these important processes work to support our ever-growing population.
