The GENE-ius Day STEM Science Communication Summer Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa held it's first class during the summer of 2019! The students' podcast were aired on the University of Hawaii Student Radio KTUH!

Dates:

June 3 - June 7, 2019. Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 3:30 daily.

About the Program:

During this one-week summer program, students will learn and implement principles of public communication and public engagement with respect to science. There are more ways than ever to create connections between people and communicate complicated subjects. This short course will help develop skills in communicating complex scientific topics to all audiences. Students will be introduced to different methods of public communication including writing (magazines, newspapers, and blogs), video (instructional and informative), audio (podcasts and radio). The remainder of the course will focus on the development of a 2-minute radio short that will be broadcast on the University of Hawaii Student Radio KTUH!

Program Highlights:

  • Students will be able to conduct interviews with University professors!
  • Students will create a podcast that will be aired on the University of Hawaii Student Radio KTUH!
  • Students will be able to select an area of interest they would like to learn more about!

Areas of Interest:

Students will be able to select one of the following areas of interest

  • Global Climate Change
  • Understanding Diversity through Genetics
  • Natural Resources and the Environment
  • Sustainable Oceans and Marine Resources

Cost:

The cost of the program is $375. This includes tuition, lunch, snacks, supplies, and use of podcasting equipment.

How to apply:

Students currently in the 9th - 12th grade are eligible to apply! Fill out this online application! Please include three references on the application.

Deadline:

The priority deadline for applications (including the recommendations from three references) is May 15, 2019. However, we will continue to accept applications until all spots are filled.
